Ghost Town Should Have Sucked

By swenson | March 21, 2009

I’m feeling pretty melancholy after watching Ghost Townwith Ricky Gervais. I didn’t originally want to watch it, but my wife likes ghost stories and I finally gave in because I am a Gervais fan.

The script is a throwaway, it could have been a Lifetime Movie or a Hallmark Channel movie. Nothing original or really that interesting. It was the acting talents of the stars that made this movie better than it should have been. I’m not even sure how they pulled it off.

I keep going back to the plot and there was no emphasis on the supernatural beyond the fact that they were a bother and no real gags or “ghost stunts”–the humor came specifically from Gervais’ character interpretation and he was probably adlibbing at times.

Even more interesting is that the main character is classic Ricky Gervais, a jerk that makes you feel uncomfortable. And his love interest is played by Tea Leoni, who is way out of his league. Yet they connect and we as the audience accept it. I can’t explain it.

Greg Kinnear is good too and, despite his star status, he manages to compliment Gervais instead of overshadowing him.

A wonderful “small” film that may be forgotten because the script really is quite “forgettable.” I hope it ends up on cable in repetitive showings so it can gain a bigger recognition for the efforts of the cast.

And I do have to say Tea Leoni needs to be given better roles from now on. She doesn’t fall into the “pretty actress” category anymore. This movie proves it.
