MR. WILSON IS A SOCIALIST?
By swenson | December 1, 2008
“Shameless capitalism!”
I sometimes turn on the TV next to my desk when I’m working on inking or coloring and so I can afford to watch badly made Christmas specials such as A Dennis The Menace Christmas (2007).
I was surprised to hear Mr. Wilson, Dennis’ grumpy next door neighbor complain that Christmas is “shameless capitalism.” Mr. Wilson won’t agree to put up any Christmas decorations or exchange gifts with Mrs. Wilson because as a postman he used to have to mail all those letters to Santa which hurt his back.
Now I don’t think Hank Ketchum would approve. Of course it doesn’t mean a United States government worker is a commie but boy that comes pretty close when it’s in a family film seen by all kinds of moderate conservatives who make their livings off of ”shameless capitalism.” On the other hand there are also ultra-religious conservatives who think anything besides the nativity on Christmas is blasphemy. Maybe Mr. Wilson falls into that camp (but doubtful the script writers were thinking of such a mindset).
The original Mr. Wilson was intended to be cranky and annoyed by Dennis but against Christmas and capitalism? C’mon!
